Dog Throwing Up Green: What It Means

✓ Vet-referenced✓ Sources citedUpdated 2026-10-10

Depends on signs

Green vomit is usually from eating grass, or bile mixed with stomach contents. Some rat and mouse baits are dyed green or blue, so green or blue-green vomit can also signal poisoning.

See a vet now if you notice:
  • Retching with nothing coming up and a swollen belly (bloat)
  • Blood or coffee-ground material
  • Vomiting with diarrhea, lethargy or belly pain
  • Not keeping water down, or not eating for 24 hours
  • Possible toxin, string or swallowed object
  • A puppy, senior or dog with health problems

Possible causes

  • Eating grass or plants
  • Bile from an empty stomach
  • Rodenticide (rat poison) dyed green or blue
  • Toxic plants

What to do

  1. If your dog ate grass and seems fine, watch for further vomiting.
  2. If there is any chance your dog got into rat or mouse bait, go to an emergency vet now and bring the package.
  3. Check our list of plants toxic to dogs if your dog chewed a plant.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a dog to throw up green?

An isolated episode in a dog that is otherwise eating, drinking and acting normally is often not serious. Repeated vomiting, or vomiting with other signs, needs a vet.

When should I worry about my dog vomiting?

See a vet if vomiting happens more than once or twice in a day, lasts more than 24 hours, contains blood, or comes with lethargy, diarrhea, belly pain or not eating. Unproductive retching with a swollen belly is an emergency.

What should I feed my dog after vomiting?

Wait a few hours, offer small amounts of water, then a small bland meal (boiled chicken and white rice). Return to the normal diet over 1-2 days if all goes well.
