What changes how much a dog drinks
- Diet. Wet food is about 75-80% water. A dog eating only wet food may get more than half of its water from food.
- Heat and exercise. Dogs cool themselves by panting, which uses water. Needs can rise by 50% or more on hot days.
- Age. Puppies need water more often and should have access all day; check the bowl after play and meals.
- Medicines. Steroids, diuretics and some seizure medicines increase thirst.
How much is too much?
Normal water intake for dogs is roughly 20-70 mL per kg per day. Drinking more than about 100 mL per kg per day is generally considered excessive (polydipsia). Common causes include diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's disease, liver disease and urinary tract infections. If your dog is suddenly drinking much more, measure a day's intake and see your vet.
Signs of dehydration
- Dry or sticky gums
- Skin that stays tented when gently pinched at the shoulders
- Sunken eyes and lethargy
- Dark yellow urine or less urine than usual
Dehydration with vomiting or diarrhea can become serious quickly, especially in puppies and small dogs. Call your vet.
Tips to keep your dog hydrated
- Keep fresh water available at all times and clean the bowl daily.
- Carry water on walks and in the car.
- Add water to kibble or feed some wet food for dogs that drink little.
- Do not let your dog gulp huge amounts after hard exercise; offer water in smaller amounts.
Frequently asked questions
How much water should a dog drink a day?
About 1 oz per lb (roughly 50-60 mL per kg). A 40 lb dog typically drinks about 4-5 cups a day, more in hot weather or with exercise.
How much water should a puppy drink?
Puppies need small amounts often: roughly half a cup every 2 hours while awake, and more after play. Keep water available during the day.
Why is my dog drinking so much water?
Hot weather, exercise and dry food can increase thirst, but drinking over 100 mL/kg a day can signal diabetes, kidney disease or Cushing's disease. See your vet.
Should I limit my dog's water at night?
For house training, many owners pick up the bowl 2-3 hours before bed. Adult dogs should otherwise have free access unless your vet advises differently.
