How the puppy weight calculator works
Puppies of different sizes grow on different schedules. Toy breeds reach adult weight by around 9-10 months, while giant breeds keep growing until 18-24 months. The calculator uses the share of adult weight a typical puppy of each size has reached at a given age, then divides your puppy's current weight by that share.
For example, a medium-size puppy at 4 months has typically reached about 50% of adult weight. A 4-month-old medium puppy weighing 18 lb would be projected to reach about 36 lb.

Rules of thumb (and why they can mislead)
- "Double the weight at 4 months" works reasonably for some small and medium dogs, but overestimates toy breeds and underestimates giants.
- "Paw size" is not a reliable predictor. Some breeds simply have large feet.
- Parents' weight is often the best clue for purebreds. For mixed breeds, the heavier parent is a rough upper bound.

Is my puppy growing too fast?
Fast growth in large and giant breeds is linked to developmental orthopedic problems. Feed a large-breed puppy food, avoid free-feeding, and keep your puppy lean. Your vet can score body condition at each vaccine visit. Use our dog food calculator with the puppy setting to estimate portions.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a puppy weight calculator?
It gives a reasonable estimate, typically within about 15%, for puppies with a known size category. Mixed breeds, very young puppies and unusual growth patterns are harder to predict.
At what age is a puppy half its adult weight?
Roughly 3-4 months for small breeds, about 4 months for medium breeds, 4-5 months for large breeds and 5-6 months for giant breeds.
When do puppies stop growing?
Toy and small breeds finish around 9-12 months, medium breeds around 12-15 months, large breeds around 15-18 months and giant breeds around 18-24 months.
How can I tell how big my mixed-breed puppy will get?
Choose the size category closest to the larger parent, or ask your vet. A dog DNA test can also suggest the breed mix and likely size.
