Garlic toxicity chart by dog weight

The table shows how much fresh garlic reaches the commonly used threshold of 0.5% of body weight in onion-equivalent (counting garlic as 5Γ— onion, the conservative end of the 3-5Γ— range). The Merck Veterinary Manual reports clinical signs in dogs at 15-30 g/kg of onion, so the threshold below is a cautious level for calling your vet, not a "safe" amount.

Powder is about 8 times stronger than fresh by weight, because the water has been removed. Repeated small amounts add up over several days.

Why garlic is toxic to dogs

Garlic contain organosulfur compounds (such as n-propyl disulfide and allicin-derived thiosulfates) that oxidize hemoglobin in red blood cells. Damaged cells form Heinz bodies and are destroyed, causing hemolytic anemia. Cooking does not destroy the toxins. Japanese breeds such as Akitas and Shiba Inus are reported to be more sensitive.

Symptoms and when they appear

Stomach upset (vomiting, diarrhea, drooling) can start within a day. Signs of anemia usually appear 1-5 days later: weakness, tiredness, pale gums, fast breathing or heart rate, and red or brown urine.

Foods that often contain garlic

  • Garlic bread and pizza
  • Pasta sauces and pesto
  • Seasoned and roasted meats
  • Garlic supplements and some "natural" flea remedies
  • Spice blends and seasoning salts

Is a little garlic good for dogs?

Some pet products contain small amounts of garlic, and claims that it repels fleas are common, but there is no good evidence that it works. Because garlic is more potent than onion and effects add up, most vets recommend avoiding it.

What to do

  1. Estimate how much was eaten and in what form, and use the calculator.
  2. Call your vet or poison control: ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 Β· Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661. If it was recent, your vet may induce vomiting.
  3. Watch for weakness, pale gums and dark urine over the next 5 days, and recheck with your vet if you see them.

Frequently asked questions

How much garlic is toxic to a dog?

Garlic is 3-5 times more toxic than onion. Using the cautious 5Γ— figure, about 1 g of garlic per kg (roughly 1 clove per 9 lb of body weight) reaches the 0.5% onion-equivalent level.

Is one clove of garlic toxic to a dog?

One clove is unlikely to cause anemia in a medium or large dog, but it can be concerning for small dogs. Call your vet.

Is garlic powder worse than fresh garlic?

Yes. Garlic powder is about 8 times more concentrated by weight.

Can dogs eat food cooked with garlic?

Small amounts of garlic in a shared bite are unlikely to cause harm, but regular feeding adds up. It is best to avoid seasoned human food.
