What Can I Give My Dog for Constipation?

✓ Vet-referenced✓ Sources citedUpdated 2026-10-10

Depends on signs

For mild constipation, increase your dog's water intake, add plain canned pumpkin or some wet food, and take more walks. Do not use human laxatives or enemas without your vet: some enemas are toxic to dogs. If your dog strains with nothing coming out for more than a day, is vomiting, or may have swallowed an object, see a vet.

See a vet now if you notice:
  • No stool for more than 48 hours, with straining
  • Vomiting, loss of appetite or a painful belly
  • Possibly swallowed a toy, bone, sock or other object
  • Straining to urinate
  • Blood in the stool or crying when passing stool

Safe home remedies

  1. Increase water: add water or low-sodium broth (no onion or garlic) to meals, and keep the bowl full.
  2. Add plain canned pumpkin, about 1 teaspoon per 10 lb of body weight, to meals.
  3. Feed some wet food, which contains more moisture.
  4. Walk your dog more: exercise helps the gut move.
  5. Ask your vet about a fiber supplement or a stool softener, and the right dose.

What not to give

  • Human enemas: sodium phosphate (Fleet) enemas can cause dangerous electrolyte imbalances, especially in small dogs.
  • Human laxatives such as bisacodyl, unless your vet prescribes them.
  • Mineral oil by mouth: it can be inhaled into the lungs and cause pneumonia.
  • Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is sometimes recommended by vets, but only use it with your vet's dose.

Common causes

  • Not drinking enough water
  • Eating bones, grass, hair, toys or other indigestible material
  • Lack of exercise
  • Enlarged prostate, anal gland problems or pain when squatting
  • Some medicines, and certain diseases

Is it constipation or something else?

Straining can also mean diarrhea (urgency without much coming out), a blockage, or a urinary problem. If your dog is straining to urinate rather than defecate, see a vet the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a dog go without pooping?

Most dogs poop once or twice a day. Going 48 hours without stool, especially with straining, warrants a call to your vet.

Does pumpkin help constipated dogs?

Yes, plain canned pumpkin adds fiber and moisture. Start with about 1 teaspoon per 10 lb of body weight.

Can I give my dog MiraLAX?

Vets sometimes recommend it, but ask your vet for the dose and to rule out a blockage first.
