"Non-toxic" doesn't mean "edible"
Cats cannot digest plant fiber well, so eating a lot of any plant, even a safe one, can cause a bout of vomiting or diarrhea. Keep an eye on:
- Fertilizers and pesticides. Systemic insecticides, fertilizer spikes and slug bait can be far more dangerous than the plant.
- Soil and pots. Some potting mixes contain fertilizer pellets; cocoa mulch is toxic to dogs.
- Bouquets. Florists often add lilies, baby's breath or eucalyptus to arrangements with safe flowers like roses. Check every stem.
Give your cat something to chew
Cats often chew plants out of boredom or to get fiber. A pot of cat grass or catnip gives them a safe outlet and can protect your other plants.
