"Non-toxic" doesn't mean "edible"
Dogs cannot digest plant fiber well, so eating a lot of any plant, even a safe one, can cause a bout of vomiting or diarrhea. Keep an eye on:
- Fertilizers and pesticides. Systemic insecticides, fertilizer spikes and slug bait can be far more dangerous than the plant.
- Soil and pots. Some potting mixes contain fertilizer pellets; cocoa mulch is toxic to dogs.
- Bouquets. Florists often add lilies, baby's breath or eucalyptus to arrangements with safe flowers like roses. Check every stem.
Dogs and the garden
Dogs are more likely to dig up bulbs and chew garden shrubs than to nibble houseplants. Fence off beds of tulips, daffodils and hostas, and never plant sago palm, yew or oleander where dogs play.
